Mercedes-Benz . How to Get the Distributor Off of a ChevyThe distributor on your Chevy distributes spark to the various cylinders. A gear on the end of the camshaft engages a gear on the bottom of the distributor, which is connected to a shaft that runs the length of the distributor housing. A rotor slides over the top of the distributor shaft. As the camshaft turns the distributor gear, the rotor turns on the shaft and passes the contacts on the distributor cap. Spark from the coil travels through the metal contacts on the rotor to the contacts on the distributor cap through the spark plug wires, to the spark plugs. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Flat screwdriver White-out Wrench set Step by Step : 1 Park the Chevy on a firm, level surface and set the parking brake. 2 Remove the air cleaner. 3 Find the raised "1" on the distributor cap. If you can't find it on the cap, trace the No. 1 spark plug wire back to the distributor cap and note which terminal it plugs into. 4 Remove the distributor cap by using a flat screwdriver to remove the two screws that hold the distributor cap onto the distributor. Note, some distributors have L-shaped, spring-loaded retainers. For these type of retainers, push down on the head of the retainer with a screwdriver and turn counterclockwise a quarter turn. You can set the cap aside with the wires still attached. 5 Lift up the cap and see where the rotor is pointing. You need to have the rotor pointing at the No. 1 spark plug terminal. If necessary, bump the engine over with the starter until the rotor is lined up with the No. 1 spark plug terminal. With the rotor properly aligned, paint a mark on the distributor housing with some whiteout, directly below the rotor. Paint a mark on the base of the distributor where it goes into the engine block. These marks will be used for reference when reinstalling the distributor. 6 Disconnect the electrical connectors from the distributor. If the distributor has a vacuum advance, unplug the rubber hose from a vacuum advance. 7 Use a wrench to remove the distributor hold-down bolt and clamp. Grab the distributor and pull it straight out. Sometimes the distributor is a tight fit and you will have to twist it back and forth while pulling it. Mercedes-Benz . How to Find Out Which Spark Plug Wire Goes to Which CylinderIf the spark plug wires on a vehicle are not marked before they are removed, you must know the firing order in order to know which spark plug wire goes to which cylinder. Because every vehicle is different, it is always a good idea -- even on four-cylinder engines -- to mark the spark plug wire location prior to removing it or to remove the wires one at a time if you are changing the plugs and wires. Difficulty:Challenging Instructions Step by Step : 1 Obtain the firing order for your vehicle. You can find the firing order in your vehicle's owner's manual or in a repair manual for your specific vehicle. If you have neither handy, an auto parts store employee might look it up for you. You also need to know if the rotor turns clockwise or counterclockwise. 2 Find the cylinder numbering. On most Chevy V8s, the driver's side is 1-3-5-7 and the passenger's side is 2-4-6-8. Cylinders 1 and 2 are always closest to the engine. On most four-cylinder engines -- no matter the make -- the firing order is 1-3-4-2 and the cylinders are numbered 1-2-3-4, with No. 1 being the closest to the front of the engine. 3 Number the terminals on the distributor. The No. 1 terminal is over the rotor when the rotor is facing the No. 1 cylinder when the engine is at top dead center. The No. 1 terminal on the distributor will be directly in line with the No. 1 cylinder if you were to draw a straight line from the terminal to the cylinder. 4 Route the No. 1 wire to the No. 1 terminal. The terminals are numbered either clockwise or counterclockwise, depending on which engine you are working on. For example, on a Chevy, the No. 1 terminal is at approximately 5 o'clock, and the No. 2 terminal is to its left, then the No. 3 terminal and so on. Route the No. 2 wire from the No. 2 cylinder to the No. 2 terminal on the cap. Repeat for all cylinders. *Atypical carburetor. You can find out how to do all these things in the following pages. If your carburetor doesn't respond to any of the adjustments in this chapter and is still causing your vehicle to stall, accelerate improperly, burn enor mous quantities of gasoline, and so on; and if the inside of your carburetor looks foul and gunky, you may want to have it rebuilt. An easier — and probably cheaper — way to deal with the problem yourself is to replace the carburetor with a new or rebuilt model, following the instructions later in this chapter. Checking your accelerator pump If your vehicle hesitates when you step on the gas pedal, your accelerator pump may not be working properly. Here's how the accelerator pump causes your car to speed up when you step on the gas pedal: When you step on the pedal, a rod connecting the pedal to a little lever, called the accelerator pump arm, which is located on the outside of the carburetor, pushes on a little piston .Chapter 13: Keeping Your Fuel System in Tune 27 7 inside the carburetor, which squirts a little extra fuel into the carburetor venturi. (See Figure 13-10.) That extra fuel creates a richer fuel/air mixture, which provides the extra power for acceleration. If your accelerator pump isn't working properly, your carburetor probably needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Mercedes-Benz . (The arm is the little lever, not the big one; that's the throttle.) If the lever doesn't move, try pushing it with your finger. If it still doesn't move, it may be caught on something. Try bending it a little to clear the obstruction. If the accelerator pump arm moves freely when someone steps on the gas pedal, take a look down the carburetor barrel to see whether fuel is squirting in when the accelerator pump arm moves. If there's no fuel action, the carburetor probably needs to be rebuilt (which involves taking it apart, cleaning it, and replacing various parts) or replaced. If you need a new carburetor, you may be just as well off getting a cheaper, rebuilt one. The sections "Installing a New or Rebuilt Carburetor" and "What to Do When All Else Fails," later in this chapter, provide your alternatives. Adjusting your accelerator pump arm Some accelerator pumps have more than one hole where the arm hooks up, to enable you to adjust the arm. Adjusting for a shorter stroke (so that the arm moves a shorter distance) gives you a leaner mixture of fuel and air; a longer stroke gives you a richer one. If your accelerator pump arm is moving O 7C Part III: Keeping Your Car in Good Condition, System by System when the gas pedal is stepped on, and fuel is squirting into the venturi when the arm is pushed, but you're still having acceleration problems, try adjusting the arm for a longer stroke.
